hello all, took Gracie for her 2nd opinion visit yesterday.

The vet looked over her records carefully and then examined Gracie. She noticed the acidy smell, even though I had just bathed her before the visit! The lab results from a previous vet visit showed that her liver and kidney functions were fine.

The conclusion was that Gracie has helicobacter, which is a bacteria in her tummy that causes lots of acid and vomiting. It is the same bacteria that causes ulcers in humans. She began treatment this morning. I am hoping all the meds stay down, vet prescribed cerenia to make sure they do...

If this doesn't take care of the problem, she will definitely have to have an upper and lower g/i and biopsies of her colon and stomach will have to be collected.

But-this vet is very optimistic that this will take care of the problem.

So I am allowing myself to be hopeful. If she is able to keep the meds down, I know she will get better.

    How's everyone else's fur-kids? Ruby doing ok?

That is wonderful news cheers cheers see you just need the right vet and they get you sorted, i pray all the meds help her and that she will come round....I think its just a case of finding out the problem then trying different treatments...Hopefully this vet will have her as fit as a fiddle in no time.

You must keep us updated on her progress....sending you both lots of love and cuddles blow kisses

P.S Ruby is doing much much better, thank you for asking

Bless..I had helicobacter and had to take a week of intence anti-biotics and tablets too so I can really sympathise with her, it wasn't nice and I felt really ill. At least now you know what it is and before you know it she will be back to her old self. Gracie's health update/2nd opinion 884462

Ste had that helicobacter too ( lol! I always call it the helicopter thing lol! )

Thanks for updating, well done for getting a second opinion, and I hope the tablets sort the problem out, with no need for further probing.

    Love to Gracie blow kisses

I had a box of tablets divided up into morning, night and evening and there was 7 days of them..I think there was around 5-6 a day. I also had to have the camera down the throat.

all day yesterday I was on pins and needles, just waiting for the big wretch, but all she did was belch acid, so today I upped the pepcid to 1/2 of a 10 mg. (the 2nd vet said 1/4-1/2 was fine for her weight of 10.76 lbs)

She's gettin pretty smart and spitting out the pills already. oh lord, it's gonna be a long two weeks.... Gracie's health update/2nd opinion Icon_rolleyes

One thing I don't understand so much is the acidy smell, I mean, she is bathed and has no vomit on her at all, but the smell coming from her is awful. poor little thing, we just hold our noses and grin and bear it.

Did your other helibactor + dogs smell like acid? or is it just our boo?

Gracie has three different meds and an additional med to keep her from vomiting it all up. Only two of the meds are twice a day, all of this for two weeks.

I know how you feel about tablets, Ruby is good but due to her been on steroids its very important i give her the tablets twice daily at the same time....so to remember i have 2 alarms set on my mobile and as soon as it goes off i jump up and give the tablet, it becomes a daily chore so easy to get used to group hug

Its like an immune disorder, a rare condition in dogs, some recover fine while others are on medication for life, just have to wait and see which way she goes Sad

ooohhhh, I hate to hear that. Hopefully she will be one to overcome it, as she obviously has a very good care giver who loves her.

Gracie is refusing to eat now, even with the cottage cheese on the food. Poor little thing, I bet all this medicine is wreaking havoc on her tummy, she is sleeping now.
