Hello all! We had 2 babies wander into our yard about 3 days ago now...One is obviously an old man we are calling him Benji for now..as it fits him hes grumbly and cute...He is the brown one..The other we are calling Shaggy..he looks to be younger, he looks like a tri colored (cocker talk? LOL) Cream (Its behind Benji on his back and tail =D), white and brown? I've posted adds on craigslist and lost dogs and have looked through all my local adds I can find for lost dogs. I look every morning for their parents. I waited a day before bathing them as they were quite scraggly when they found us and Shaggy was loaded with burrs. Their eyes as you could see in this pic had fur covering them. This pic I took the first day they were here....I didn't want to mess with their coats (Benji's is short already I don't know if its natural and he may be a mix...cut or just ole man fur..lol!) So all I did was trim around their eyes as they both needed it..and I cut out and trimmed up the fur around Shaggy's feet so the cut outs from the burrs didnt look to silly. I'm not sure how long would be appropriate to give Shaggy a trim ( not experienced in Shihtzu's coats, but I cut My cocker babies fur for years). So far no responses to any e-mails or adds..Shaggy really needs a cut and they need nail trims and such but don't want to be overzealous in me wanting them to be 100% healthy and tick off their Mama! LOL!. Benji is a bit grumbly but I think he's quite older so it makes sense...nothing major..Shaggy is very laid back and sweet and loving, everyone is his pillow! LOL! On top of that, isn't he just gorgeous? I already have a black lab/dachshund mix who is a year old named Charlie, they are all getting along great for the most part. So saying hello and just looking for advice as a foster Mama...Neither of these boys are fixed and neither is my Charlie but they are keeping the testosterone levels down perty good! LOL!

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
Hi, welcome, gosh i hope you find the owners.. what will you do if no one responds?
The dark one looks a bit like a griffon or a yorkie mix to me, cant quite put my finger on it, and the gold one looks like a lhasa apso.
If you are going to sort them out i would just check for matts and give them a clean up and comb through and check their eyes, ears feet and bum areaa and trim if needs be but not go mad with their coats at the minute as they're probably really stressed out and dont look like they're desperate for cutting, although you cant always tell from pics.
Well done for looking after them

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
gosh thats so sad they are lost, do you have a rescue centre near you or a vet to check if they are microchipped?
Thank goodness a caring person like you has found them, I think one of them looks like a yorkie or border terrier mix and the other a llahsa apso maybe???
I wouldnt do much to their coats etc until you can find their owners and they are feeling a bit more settled, what will you do if you cant find their owner?
wishing the best outcome for you all and yes well done for looking after them!

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
Basically, what we did is a basic trimming as you guys had suggested already. Got rid of the burrs and trimmed their eyes. Brushed them and bathed them. Well my family has fallen in love with them and all dogs have packed up famously..my husband has laid hints if we don't find their owners he wants to keep them, lol! We've done everything but the microchipping, didn't think of that, we will call our vet today to find out about that service. I think you guys are right, I'd never heard of a griffon before..in google (angelic music LOL!) I found a brussels- griiffon..he looks just like the breed..they all look like old men! LOL! How cute.. and the lighter one is definitely llahsa apso after googling (again angelic music, some trumpets) ...Love google ....
The rescues are out around here..I've looked around and all of them are so overloaded they aren't even taking dogs, so i leave my name and number incase anyone calls looking for them, they are such sweet dogs I wouldn't want to ship them out to a kennel when they are just fine our home at the moment. I will keep looking and maybe one of them knows something of their owners. Being they seem to be pure bred I cannot imagine anyone dumping them they are sweet and well mannered, loving gentle, well socialized. But the weird thing, Benji (Griffon) had a collar but no tags....Shaggie ( llahsa apso) had a cat collar on and no tags. Weird, i'snt it?
Then again last month we found a great dane puppy..pure bread reverse brindle coloring..which is rare..we did the same thing...we kept him for a few days but he was WAY too big for our home...at we were guessing around 6 months..he was already taller than me standing up...and he wasn't fully housebroken..it was like a horse having oopsies int he house..so we had to send him to the shelter and redirected any calls for him to there. I hope he found his parents, if not I'm sure he got a home fast being 50.00 adoption at the shelter lol! Especially for a dane pup.
You guys have been such wonderful help, especially in figuring out the breed of these babies...I'm going to check out other breed specific forums and see if I can find anything in those as well.
To add, I would never leave a stray outside, never could...I always have to rescue them and either find their parents, a rescue or the shelter if absoloutley necessary, though I try to avoid it as much as possible. Especially with the highway not too far from my house, I've seen so many babies lives taken there

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
Sounds like you are doing great and well done to you. You don't have to have a shih tzu to be a member here, all breeds welcome so feel free to stay with us or even just keep us updated if you find the owners.. or decide to keep them if no one comes forward

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
Thanks Claire thats awesome, I was basically hoping to link to rescues via breed specific forums and maybe help find the owners that way, I did find a llahsa apso one, but the griffon is a whole nother issue..LOL...still looking though.....I can only imagine how much they are missing these two..only trouble we've had with them is Shaggie (Llahsa apso) is marking...so I'm cleaning it and keeping an eagle eye with my spray bottle...LOL! If he starts doing that, then the other 2 males will follow and EEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.........LOL! Guess he's getting comfortable though...lol!

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
Monika I find a reg old squirt bottle works great..It does not hurt them or scare them, just catches their attention. When you see him sliding up by where hes gonna mark, just give him a squirt of water and a firm no, or outside..whatever word you prefer..I usually say excuse me or no sir..and they look at me like.."I didn't do it.." though I caught them..LOL! I used this to successfully train my male cats that marked as well 99% of the time.
Thanx I love the little dancing smiley in my sig..hes so cute :)
They Don't seem to have been mistreated, they aren't afraid of people at all and are wells socialized, but who knows....Though I'm almost 100% if we don't find their owners they will be finding a forever home with us as we all love them :)...here a few update pics...after a bit of a trim and a bath..didn't worry about trimming perfection as they had been through enough, just enough to see, remove burrs and make the bur removals not look silly...
Benji & Shaggie
he froggysprawls! I LOVE it!
How cute is this little face?

They are both just gorgeous and shaggy has got the most adorable face ever.

Re: Surprise...its a shihtzu!
:) We love them, but if their Mama is out there somewhere worrying to death I would want someone to do the same for me. Were doing everything we can to find their people parents. I know his face is so adorable and his personality matches it :). But I can say if we cannot find them, they will prolly stay with us they are such good puppies. We will keep everyone posted!
