We have rescued a Shih tzu who is about a year and a half. Have not even had him a week but the house breaking is not going well. We have always had bassets who were easy to train. This little fella was supposed to be house broken but the rescue only had him for about two weeks when we adopted Sprite. We take him out every two hours and directly after his two meals, yet still find a poop once a day in the same place. We have him in a crate at night and he is good about that.

    Any suggestions will be welcome.

    Hi

When I got Honey a month ago I just put her out after each meal and she got used to that and pooped then. I am new to the forum an my knowledge is limited- but lots of others will be along soon and they know heaps and heaps about shih tzus and they will help.

This really takes time, just keep taking outside as much as you can esp after naps and meals and positive reinforcement every time they go outside to loo as it will take time for some to settle in and understand where they need to go... Cheese worked for us! Don't give up :)

Hallo and  welcome  from me and the crew

You are doing all the right things and like Ally says every time he does his toilet outside give him loads of praise and a treat something special that he really likes cheese or hot dog sausage often work really well.

It may take a while as shihtzu are very stubborn and have to know whose boss and being a little rescue man its hard for you to know what training if any has been done.

Try washing the area he is using in the house with white vinegar as its supposed to stop them resoiling.
