We are going to be getting a shih tzu within the next few months. Growing up I always had big dogs, labs and retrievers. This will be our first small dog and we are all excited about the new addition to our family. My daughter will be turning 5 so this will be her dog but of course me(mom) will be taking care of her. So I went to several breeders to get some information and find myself more confused than ever.

i am excited I found this forum and hopefully it will answer lots of questions that I still have.

yes we have been to a local breeder and we saw some puppies but she was adking 900 dollars for a puppy a little out of our price range. with a little more research we found another breeder for 450 a little better so she is expecting to have pups by christmas and we will be getting one for our daughter who is turning 5. we are all excited. i can't wait to look at all the posts to get as much info about the breed as possible.

That's great news! I don't know what they ask over there for a shih tzu puppy over there but $450 seems cheap... are you sure this breeder is OK?

Sorry but I tend to agree with Claire

The price you would expect to pay here for a good quality pup from a reputable breeder would be anything from £500 to £700

But still lots of time for you to look around what a very exciting time for you all.

Ask away with any questions there are loads of experienced guys on here to offer advice. daisy

I would ask lots of questions if i were you too, is there a shih tzu club in your area for the breed?, we have one over here perhaps they could help you as well so you know how much to expect to pay etc?

I found the breeder rom a shih tzu league in our state. I know it is not a puppy mill. that was a huge concern for me. Great advice I am going to look for a shih tzu club and meet up with them and find out more information, maybe they will even know of other reputable breeders. thanks

Yes thats the best way to go and at least they can put you in touch with good breeders, its a long road trying to find a good puppy but dont let it get the better of you and keep searching.
